Bass Guitar Effects – Echo, Delay and Reverb

Echo, delay and reverb are bass guitar effects that when used properly can add a little depth and interest to your sound. These types of effects are probably more suited to recording than for live performances. In rooms with poor acoustics, you will be trying your hardest to reduce echo and reverb, not add to it. However, these effects units do have their place in a bass player’s box of tricks and so lets take a little look at what they do.

Echo or Delay

As the name suggests, these units copy the incoming signal and output it again slightly later than the original signal. The echo can be set to repeat once or multiple times, gradually fading out. These units are available as analog and digital. While digital produces a much cleaner echo, analog units are preferred by many for their warmer, more natural sound. Used subtly, these units can give more depth to your sound. Depending upon the acoustics of the room, they may not be appropriate. Some rooms will have a natural echo and adding to it will make your sound very muddy and indistinct.

Reverb

Short for reverberation, reverb is a more extreme type of echo. If you have ever shouted or clapped your hands in a large empty room or hall, you will have heard the sound being repeated over and over after the original sound has stopped. Some reverb units will have several types of reverb sounds that emulate various types of rooms or chambers such as an empty hall for example. In the past reverb was accomplished mechanically by means of a spring or plate. In fact plate reverb is usually one of the options in multi reverb units.

As mentioned earlier, these types of bass guitar effects may not always be suitable for live playing and should always be used sparingly. As with most effects, less is usually more and a subtle touch of echo or reverb can really enhance your sound while too much will just make the whole band sound terrible.

Because these effects should be subtle, they are better suited to softer types of music such as jazz where a little echo or reverb will add another dimension to the music. However, in a rock band a subtle touch of echo or reverb will get lost when competing with a hard-hitting drummer and wall of guitars.
